India ended their World Cup campaign on a winning note as they won a thriller against South Africa by one run but did not do enough to get ahead of Pakistan in terms of net run rate and made an early exit from the tournament. Batting first, India suffered a top-order failure and ended with a rather disappointing 151 on the board thanks to good knocks by Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni, while with the ball Zaheer Khan and L Balaji starred with 3 wickets each to help India win by 1 run. Faf du Plessis hit a counter-attacking knock to keep SA in the game but fell in the end as SA fell agonizingly short.
Australia took a big stride towards qualifying for the semi-finals after registering a convincing eight wicket win over traditional rivals, South Africa. Chasing a victory target of 147, Australia coasted home thanks to a belligerent knock of 70 by Shane Watson. The burly right hander continued his impressive showing in the tournament with yet another Man of the Match performance. Australia now top the table with 4 points with South Africa consigned to the exit queue having lost both their matches so far.
